Wedding DJ Playlist Sample

Below you will find a solid set list for a wedding DJ playlist. As you can see, we start off with some good ol' Motown. Groove Me is a great crossover song into disco...it's Motown yet funky! then we slide from disco into Top 40. From there we beat mix into 80's alternative. then we drop a couple of Old School 80s hits, into 90 Fun Rap and wrap it up with the bouncy Venga Boys. Here we have a hard transition back into oldies, but we move into the classics, since everyone is good N' drunk and ready to go crazy! We end the set with Shout. At the end of this wedding DJ playlist, people were falling over from exhaustion. It rocked!
I want you back Jackson 5

This is, of course, just a sample, but it covers a huge gambit of music. It is about an hour and a half long and has such a wide variety, you're sure to please just about everybody within this time. Now, if you've seen a bigger response on the dance floor for a given genre, then get back to that genre quickly. And, likewise, if you got NO response to a certain genre, don't bother playing the other one or two songs. Get right into the next set. You can also use many of these upbeat song for your wedding entrance songs.  Have fun and remember, your wedding DJ playlist is a living, breathing document!

Moving on to the Dance wedding DJ playlist. Here you'll find a variety of dance songs from a variety of dance sub-genres. All of these should be considered dance throwbacks from 80's to 90's...these all can be mixed back and forth with each other. This will make it easier for your DJ to mix these songs. And your DJ should be able to pull songs off of this list and put them in the right grouping. This is just one song from each letter of the alphabet. For the complete list 77 songs, download my Wedding Songs Time Line Planner. Have fun with this list!

Wedding Reception Music For Dancing

So here are some categories and their descriptions DJ's pull from when building their wedding dj playlist:

Dance: Prince, Madonna, and Michael Jackson are your early dance artists. Nowadays you've got Lady Gaga and The Black Eyed Peas putting out the hits. This is a fairly broad category that reaches into many of the categories listed below, but for our purposes, we'll try to keep this category as narrow as possible.

Disco: Flashback to the late 1970's! Artists like Donna Summer, The Bee Gees, and KC and the Sunshine Band fit into this music category. Very danceable, but some standards may be a little too played out (read Celebration by Kool and the Gang).

Old School: This music genre is very similar to disco and some songs even cross over into Old School. Songs like Atomic Dog, Electric Kingdom, and Rapper's Delite fall under this umbrella. A lil mo' funky, fo sho!

Rap: This category breaks down into a couple of niches: Old school rap is similar to Rapper's Delite mentioned above and also includes 80's rap like Bust A Move and It Takes Two. 90's rap, like Back to da Hotel and the campy Ice, Ice Baby land here. And there's Gangsta Rap from the likes of Tu Pak Shakur, Ice Cube, Ice T , and anyone else with "Ice" in their name.

Top 40 Rap: This would be the most current rap out there. As of 2010, artists like Kanye West, Ludacris, and Lil Wayne are on the charts.

Top 40 Pop: Ugh, huge category here, but it's any new songs that people dance to. Pink, Britney Spears, and even Miley Cyrus (for the tween-agers) fit in here. This category could also include alternative bands such as All-American Rejects and A Simple Plan and even Paramore (yes, people do dance to those bands).

And there are even more Top 40 categories, but we'll stick to music playlist-friendly areas. We're trying to get people to dance. We'll be skipping dinner type music like AC (Adult Contemporary) and Vocal Jazz (Sinatra, Dean Martin, Etc).

Rock: Come on...feel the noize. Guns N' Roses, AC/DC, Def Leppard fill out the older section while newer rockers such as Daughtry, Fall Out Boy, Thrice, and Avenged Sevenfold jam up this group.

Motown: Doo-wop your way across the dance floor to The Four Tops, The Temptations, and Diana Ross (pre-Upside Down, boy you turn me) and the Supremes. Even Little Michael with the Jacksons fall in line here.

Oldies: Twist and shout to the Beatles, Chubby Checker, Little Richard, and the like. This is a fun genre that can be thrown in as a "twist" LOL once in a while.

Big Band: Sure you could play In The Mood by Glenn Miller, but newer artists swept the nation in the late 90's (Thank you, "Swingers") like Big Bad VooDoo Daddy, Blue Plate Special, and Brian Setzer's comeback with his Orchestra.

House/Techno/Rave: I know, these are three completely separate genres with their own multitude of sub-categories, but we're talking about a wedding DJ playlist, not a "Drop the bass on your head" 2000 person Rave-stravaganza! Sandstorm by Darude, Zombie Nation, and The Launch are still popular at weddings.

Latin: Mucho gusto! And so many sub-categories I can't even name them. Okay, I can so here goes...Cumbias (slower, groovier, cowbell-ier), Reggaeton (most popular, almost like latin rap), Salsas (standard swingy-type dance music), Merengues (mucho rapido, very fast, rockin' and movin'!), Bachatas (like a mix between Salsas and Cumbias, but bouncier), Rancheras/Nortena (Scream at the top of your lungs, "Ahhyeeeeeeeeaaahhh!!!"), and finally Rock En Espanol (like 80's new wave in Spanish).

Country: Yee-haw. Garth Brooks, Tim McGraw, Faith Hill...get yer sh*#-kickers on.

Alternative/New Wave: Dropping older songs with good beats from Depeche Mode, New Order, and the B-52's make the baby boomers move their feet.

And Finally, Group Dances: I know, gack! But people still like the Chicken Dance and the Macarena (although I would avoid these like health care reform). The Cha Cha Slide and the Cupid Shuffle are newer and still fun, though.

So, there you have it. The Many genres and some very brief descriptions of what we as DJ's have to go through as we put together set lists. Many of these categories you can skip, simply because you don't want them at your wedding and that's just fine. But, the more variety you have the more people you will please. Sure, one couple might get up to dance to a latin song, but it doesn't mean you have to play 3 latin songs in a row! I've seen DJ's play a song for one couple and they danced for all of 2 minutes then walked off the floor. This pro DJ faded out the song and changed genres right then and there. There are more exceptions to the golden rule and I'll discuss other tips and tricks for creating the perfect wedding dj playlist in the future. Until then!

The #1 Rule For Your Wedding DJ Playlist

Whenever soon-to-be married couples work on their Wedding DJ Playlist they usually don't take into consideration the golden rule in building that list of wedding songs. The first rule of the playlist is...you do not talk about the playlist! I'm kidding, but many couples actually have that attitude and are afraid to tell their DJ what and how to play their sets of music. Don't make this mistake. Some (not all) DJ's have a set show for every single wedding they perform at, but that won't work for every crowd because every crowd is different! You don't want the DJ playing Hip Hop and rap music if the crowd is mostly your parent's age. You can play some hip hop but you need to make sure the DJ is following the #1 rule.

So, here it is...The number one rule for your wedding DJ playlist: Only play 3 songs from the same genre in a row. That's it! That is the FIRST rule when building your music playlist for dancing.

I know, it sounds too simple but it is what will make or break your dance floor! If your DJ is playing more than 3 songs in a row of a certain style, the guests who dislike that style will start to wonder if the rest of the night will be all that kind of music. 3 songs come out to about 10 to 12 minutes of music, which is a good length of time for a dancing set. Then the music switches up and those who were dancing go get a drink and rest up while those who like the new style crash the floor. then again, sometimes people just never leave the danced floor at all and that would be awesome!

Now I'm not saying to go from Reggae to Death Metal! If your DJ is talented, he can make the transitions smooth. For instance, the DJ can start of with Motown for a few, then come in with some disco, then mix into some top 40 dance. There's about 30 to 40 minutes of straight up dance music. You can move on to some classic rock from there or, since it is a wedding, hit your peeps up with a slow ballad. I'll go over some great song transitions and playlists in future posts, so stay tuned for that.

As always, there is an exception to this rule. You can get away with playing 5 or 6 songs from the same genre if your DJ mixes out of each song early. And I mean 2 minutes into the song. As you can see, it's more about the amount of time your guests are subjected to a certain style of music, which is about 10 to 12 minutes. If you go over that time, you will run into problems and you will most likely have guests heading out the door early. Don't believe me? Have your DJ play the best top 40 dance songs for 40 minutes and watch half of your guests run out the door!

So, again, here it is: Only play 3 songs from the same genre in a row. Don't forget this rule, the golden rule, the first rule in building your wedding DJ playlist for you and your guests.

Welcome to my blog, Wedding DJ Playlist! I'm excited to get started in helping you create the perfect music playlists for your wedding, whether it is dinner songs to dance sets.
Creating the appropriate mix is crucial to your wedding reception's success. I should know since I've been DJing and planning weddings for over 15 years! One of the biggest struggles with soon-to-be-newlyweds is making sure all the guests stay and dance--and not leave so early that all you hear is crickets chirping with 2 hours left to your "party." Putting the right songs together will definitely make a huge difference in the outcome of your reception. That's where I come in.
I'm James Loram and I've found some incredibly easy tips and tricks to get your guests dancing and keep them there all night.

My very first post (well, it will be my second post since this post is truly my first!) will be the NUMBER ONE WEDDING DJ PLAYLIST TIP!!! You will not want to pass this up as it will have a huge impact on how your dance floor flows and how involved your guests get into the music.
If you want your guests having an awesome time from the cocktail hour to the last dance and if you want them dancing all night so they complain (complain that their feet hurt from dancing!), then you've come to the right place!
thanks again for visiting wedding DJ playlist and fell free to leave questions and comments anytime!
